Sign Painting: the ‘Other’ Muralism.

Hans Christian Andersen, Anamaría Ashwell, María Luisa Cárdenas, María del Pilar Castro Rodríguez, Martín M. Checa Artasu, Rafael López Castro, José Emilio Salceda, Enrique Soto Eguibar, Giovanni Troconi, Rafael Vargas

Mexican cityscapes feature ingenious drawings and texts whose aim is to sell products, advertise their benefits or quite simply embellish storefronts. Though anonymous, many of these signs display great artistic skill. The signage of convenience stores, stationery shops, delicatessens and other commercial establishments forms part of an aesthetic phenomenon that usually goes unnoticed on a day-to-day basis, and that is examined here for the first time from an artistic perspective.
