Artes de México

Music from the Independence to the Revolution

Ignacio Manuel Altamirano, Manuel Gutiérrez Nájera, Ricardo Miranda, Amado Nervo, Vicente Quirarte, Verónica Salazar.

During the nineteenth century, music had the power to transform the spaces where it was played, fulfilling a more important role than we might think, since it was during soirées around the piano that relationships were forged, agreements were made, and even the fate of nations decided. This issue of Artes de México not only examines the period’s complex social structure, but also attempts to unearth the musical essence of the past. In addition to its historical survey consisting of articles, accounts, scores, photographs and lithographs, this issue includes a CD featuring period pieces played by pianist Silvia Navarrete.
