The custom of making portraits of children after death has existed in Mexico for several centuries, as part of a larger ritual practice whose aim is to convert sorrow into joy and celebrate a pure soul’s transition into a new life. In these portraits, the dead children are considered to be angels and as such, they are not mourned but honored.
